Cricket is second religion in India. Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan, with Aamir Khan in the lead role, combined this with the tale of the underdog, and whipped up enough audience hysteria to make it a classic. The period film takes you back to the time of British colonial rule in India when the villagers were heavily taxed by the British. Young Bhuvan challenges them to a game of cricket, a game that is to be played by veteran British cricket players, versus villagers, who’ve never played the game before. And they’re all game to take on the challenge as victory would entail a tax-free life for them. The film is a lesson in unity, courage and dedication… which makes Indians literally beat the British at their own game. Lagaan was India’s official entry for the Academy Awards however it did not make it to the nominations.
